Money saving tips for Friday.

Saving Money
The Burger King of Travel

I stumbled upon a great new website today called Tripbase today which lets you

“Travel Your Way”.

‘Traveling your way’ is simply rating your interests for a vacation on a scale to sort out the best places to go. The scales given are those of: nightlife, dining, shopping, nature and attractions.

For example, if you’re all about the nightlife, dining and shopping, New York City or Barcelona would probably be a place you’d want to check out. Or, if you’re more into nature why not plan a trip to the famous Yosemite National Park in California? Or! If you love everything equally to the full extent, big cities like New York or London may be your best bet.

The wild thing for me was, I quickly put the scales to how a rated each category and the listed places to travel were destinations I have always dreamed of going (San Francisco, San Diego, Sydney Australia, Cape Town South Africa).

What’s even cooler about this site is the fact that after you find all these places that meet your vacation desires, they then list the average cost per day! Although, I do feel like I might spend a bit more than $98 a day in San Francisco.

After all of this pure unfiltered awesomeness when you pick a place that meets your desires of the heart and wallet you can click ‘More’ to read more about the area. The ‘More’ area lists local attractions, articles about the area, travel guides, pictures and year round weather forecasts. I for one am in love.

If Saints Came in Calculator Form: this would be one to worship

Another really spiffy thing I’ve found today on the web via RealSimple.com was the Kitchen Calc Pro – Master Chef’s Addition.

Basically, it converts measurements for those tricky recipes from that kooky anti-imperial aunt or recipes from other countries.

What’s super snazzy about it is that it saves you time, frustration AND ingredients (which means money, money, money). Personally, being an American living in the metric dependent country of England I have no idea what is what and usually end up buying way too many or way too little ingredients for recipes (when the full moon comes out and I actually decide to cook instead of Dominos Pizza-ing it).

Another cool thing it has a large key pad which one, is good for the seeing impaired, and two great when you’re cooking and have ingredients stuck to your hands! Why? Because since they’re big keys you would only get one or two keys buttery/floury/messy instead of the whole key pad like you might on a smaller calculator.

All in all I can’t really explain it any better than the site does:
  • “Accurately scale recipes up or down
  • Scale for number of servings, portions, or both
  • Convert cooking volume units
  • Convert units of weight
  • Convert temperatures”
To summarize, the travel website and measurement calculator are equally awesome for one main reason. What, you may ask? Saving money of course! You can find a great vacation based on your travel and fiscal desires and then save money on ingredients for recipes (perhaps from that exotic far off country you’re vacationing in) that you’re not quite sure how to convert. I recommend putting the calculator in your carryon luggage, as that is not something you want to let out of your sight.
